DUBOIS – Art from area students, including samples of pencil work, photos, painting and digital art was displayed at the Winkler Gallery of Fine Art in DuBois. The artwork were submissions to the annual Congressional Art Competition. One piece of art per United States district will hang between the Cannon House Office Building and the United States Capitol building.
U.S. Representative Glenn Thompson, R-Howard, made an appearance at the Winkler’s Gallery of Fine Art on Saturday to announce the winner. The entries had been judged the day before by Marianne Fyda and Richard Kenawell. Both Fyda and Kenawell have a bachelor of fine arts from Wayne State Univerity and the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, respectively.
Thompson approached the Winkler Gallery to host the competition that would have otherwise been done in an office.
There were 25 in all. Two entries had been rejected on the grounds of having been matted, but not framed.
“We’re hoping it grows,” said Craig Lucas, field representative and district staffer.
Both Lucas and Peter Winkler, district director, both of whom who work for Thompson, said they hoped next year to have at least one piece of artwork from each school district in the district.
“The whole process of learning to apply to contests and shows is very critical. This is a good first step,” said Perry Winkler.
Winkler explained that the rules for this competition were very lenient compared to professional standards. If the students keep submitting to competitions there will be rules far more restrictive then these.

- Second Place – Amanda Becher of Montgomery School District
- Third Place – Jessica Castle of Williamson High School.
- Fourth Place – Abby Keck of the DuBois Area School District
- Fifth Place – Gavin Luzier of West Branch School District
