PENFIELD – Programs have been announced for June 16-25 at the Parker Dam State Park.
Friday, June 16
Conservation Hero—Abele:
4 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
Pennsylvania has an impressive history of conservation. Many folks however, do not know the whole story about those individuals who helped shape the idea of conservation. You can learn about Ralph Abele, whose philosophy helped protect Pennsylvania’s waterways and aquatic life.
Conservation Hero—Dock:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Continuing the theme of Conservation Heroes, this program focuses on Mira Lloyd Dock, conservationist and the first woman to have job in Pennsylvania government.
Saturday, June 17
Ferns of the Beaver Dam Trail:
10 a.m. – outside Park Office
You can come and hike the Beaver Dam trail and learn about the variety of fern species found there. Please wear footwear appropriate for hiking.
Conservation Hero—Pinchot:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Park staff will continue the Conservation Hero theme from June 16, and this time focusing on Gifford Pinchot—forester and governor.
Sunday, June 18
Tea and Talk:
7 p.m. – Beach House steps
You can bring a cup/mug to try some sweet fern/mountain mint tea. Topics are open for discussion and you can come with an idea of what you want to know or share. Tea and Talk has been going on for many years and you can be a part.
Thursday, June 22
GPS Basics:
10 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
You can learn how to use a GPS to confidently get from place to place. You can mark a location, navigate back to the location, project a location, etc. Also, you can learn about Geocaching.
Friday, June 23
The 1,000-Yard Model:
7 p.m. – Campground Host Site (No. 107)
Do you remember those solar system models you made in grade school? How accurate do you think they were? You can come and check out a “scale model” of our solar system.
Saturday, June 24
Viewing the Night Sky:
1 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
You can come learn and get prepared for watching the night sky during the summer season and beyond. When the weather cooperates, there is always plenty to see.
Solar:
3 p.m. – Beach House
How do we use the sun’s energy? You can learn some of the ways that the sun and its energy can be helpful to us.
The 1,000-Yard Model–PowerPoint:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
You can learn about the planets, size differences, and the relative spacing of our solar system. It’s not your Styrofoam Solar System Model.
