CURWENSVILLE – What a difference six and half weeks made for the Curwensville Lady Tide softball team on Monday in a home game with visiting Johnsonburg.
In Johnsonburg, on April 5, the Ramettes shut out the Lady Tide by a score of 4-0, as Curwensville managed just two lone singles on the day.
Monday was a completely different game for Curwensville, both offensively and defensively, as the Lady Tide inched closer to a District 9 playoff berth with a 13-7 victory over the Ramettes.
Curwensville, needing just one win over the next three games to qualify for the postseason, committed zero errors after having three miscues in game one, and smacking out 14 hits after just those two singles first time around against Johnsonburg.
Leading the hit parade for Curwensville were shortstop Kayley Harnett and Chloe Tubbs, the designated player, with three hits each while second baseman Keisha Maines chipped in with two.
In somewhat of a rarity, the Lady Tide had all nine batters score at least one run in the contest, not counting the flex player, pitcher Clerissia Cole.
Lady Tide head coach Allen Leigey said after the win, “I thought we put together our best effort of the year, both offensively and defensively. Our defense was really on top of its game this afternoon, making timely plays all around. Making plays when we needed them. And offensively, we just came alive and ready to hit with the bats this afternoon. One of those days whenever everything came together.”
After giving up one run in the top of the first inning the Lady Tide scored two in the bottom of the inning to go out in front 2-1.
A walk to leadoff hitter Hannah Dixon and singles by Camryn Richards, Tubbs and Ariel Zattoni netted the two first innings scores for the Tide.
Not to be outdone, not yet anyway, the Ramettes tied the game at 2-2 with a lone tally in the second inning. But in the bottom half of the second Curwensville jumped on Johnsonburg starting pitcher Hannah Park for four more runs to take a 6-2 edge after two frames.
Park was the winning hurler who shut out the Lady Tide on two hits the first time the two squads tangled.
Johnsonburg decided to change pitchers and go to Skylar Sherry after just two innings with Park. That move looked good in the bottom of the third inning when Curwensville didn’t score and the Ramettes came back with a run in the top of the fourth to cut the Lady Tide lead in half at 6-3.
Then smash, boom, bang and the Lady Tide bats went to work and put the game away in the bottom half of the fourth inning, scoring seven times to take a 13-3 margin.
Curwensville, in the fourth, picked up two hits from Harnett, with singles from Tubbs, Lauren Tozier, Maines, Mikayla Warren pinch hitting and the big blow, a double to left field by Dixon that drove in two of the seven runs.
Maines also had two RBI’s in the fourth with her single.
Catcher Bailey Bloom and Richards also drove in two runs apiece on the day for Curwensville.
Maria Jones was a perfect four for four for Johnsonburg, with three runs scored, two RBI’s and a double and a triple.
The Ramettes dropped to 12-6 on the 2017 season.
The Lady Tide (7-10) return to action on Tuesday hosting a doubleheader starting at 2 pm.
And, as Leigey put it, “We just need to get one more win to qualify and we are in.”
Brockway will be the opponent for the Lady Tide in the first game. The Lady Rovers defeated Curwensville earlier this season, in Brockway, 6-5.
Immediately following game one the Tide will battle Elk County Catholic. The Lady Crusaders blanked Curwensville the first time they played, in St. Mary’s, 4-0.
