CLEARFIELD – “Building Better Readers, Language and Literacy Series,” will be offered by Penn State Extension of Clearfield County at the Lock Haven University Clearfield Campus, 201 University Circle, Clearfield, in the second floor student lounge.
Building Better Readers: Strategies for Dialogic Reading will be held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. May 4 and Building Blocks of Literacy: Strategies for Phonological Awareness & Oral Language from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. May 11.
All parents, foster parents, child care providers, teachers and other service professionals are encouraged to attend the training being conducted by Dr. Bethann McCain, PDE Keystone to Opportunity program manager/director of curriculum and innovation with the Central Intermediate Unit No. 10.
Jacqueline Amor-Zitzelberger, Penn State better kid care educator, says that, “Research tells us that one out of six children who do not read by age level by the end of third grade will not graduate from high school.
“Early care and education professionals and parents can use strategies to engage children in conversation about their favorite stories. This is called dialogic reading, and it goes beyond naming objects in the pictures to thinking more about how it related to the children’s own experiences.
“ECE providers and parents will also learn how to develop children’s phonological and oral language skills that are so critical in fostering successful readers.”

The workshop is part of a statewide Better Kid Care child care provider training program presented by Penn State Extension.
The program is partially underwritten by Pennsylvania Departments of Education and Human Services. It is being sponsored by the Northwest Regional Key.
Child care providers can receive two DHS training credits for participating in each workshop. Penn State is an Act 48-approved provider.
Professional educators are encouraged to confirm that this program fits their school district’s professional development plan for Act 48.
You can earn two hours toward fulfilling Act 48 requirements by attending this entire program. CEU hours are available upon request.
This workshop is another in a series of trainings scheduled as an educational workshop for early childhood and school-age caregivers/educators.
Amor-Zitzelberger will be coordinating these efforts to bring this program to not only local child care providers, but also interested parents and other service providers.
