WINGATE — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team braved the snowy conditions of Interstate-80 on Tuesday night, but suffered a 45-27 loss at the hands of the Bald Eagle Area Eagles.
The Eagles, fresh off of their sixth place finish at the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat Tourney over the weekend, picked up six falls and three regular decisions to outdistance the Bisons with their three falls, a forfeit, and one regular decision.
The match started at 106 and the hosts ran out to a quick 18-0 lead after three falls. Garrett Giedroc picked up a first period fall over Peyton Smay at 106, then two Bisons making their varsity wrestling debuts, Kyler Rosinsky at 113 and Johnathan Thomas at 120, were also pinned.
Lucas Holderman and Matt Ryan then hooked up in a donnybrook at 126 with Holderman outlasting Ryan 19-13 to up the Eagle lead to 21-0.
Jude Pallo picked up his first win of the young season with a 5-2 decision over Clayton Giedroc at 132 to stymie the BEA momentum for a moment.
The Eagles got it right back at 138 when Top Hat Tourney champion Garrett Rigg built up a big 18-4 lead over Quenten Edwards, then notched the fall at the 4:29 mark to extend the host’s lead to 27-3.
It was 33-3 at the halfway mark of the match when Top Hat runner-up Seth Koleno made short work of Jacob Carter at 145.
At 152, BEA’s Gage McClenahan, another runner-up at the Top Hat, used a big five point second period to open up a close match against Clearfield’s Caleb Freeland, another Bison making his varsity debut, to win 9-2 and give the Eagles a commanding 36-3 advantage.
Hunter Wright momentarily stopped the bleeding with his first period fall over Bailey Irvin at 160.
The Eagles got those six points right back with a Dylan Bisel fall at the 3:46 mark of his match with Thayne Morgan at 170.
Top Hat champion Luke McGonigal kept his record unscathed for the Bison at 182 with a fall in 2:24 over Andrew Cohen.
In the closest match of the night, BEA’s David Close used a third period escape and takedown to decision Steven Sawyer 3-1 at 195 for Bald Eagle’s final team points.
The Bison made it a final respectable team score after BEA forfeited to Top Hat runner-up Hunter Bumbarger at 220, and Avery Gisewhite continued his strong start to the season with a 3:56 fall over Kurt Hall at 285 to set the final at 45-27.
The Bison (0-1) will open their home campaign on Thursday night when they host the DuBois Beavers at the Weiss Gymnasium in the battle for the third annual Pete Morelli Memorial plaque.
