JOHNSTOWN – DuBois Area High School is among forty Individuals, businesses and organizations honored by American Red Cross Blood Services, Greater Alleghenies Region, during its recent annual meeting, “Passing the torch to the new generation of American Red Cross leaders.”
The Greater Alleghenies Region’s annual meeting was held May 27 at The Conference Center of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
This year’s awardees come from 26 counties in the Red Cross blood region’s 100-county territory.
DuBois Area High School received the Greater Alleghenies Region’s High School of the Year Award.
The award was presented to Tim Deluccia, Superintendent, Roger Collins, High School Principal, Marielle Bertram and Shannon Haag, National Honor Society Representatives, by youth guest speakers Jim Harvey, regional advisory board member and vice president of the Penn State Red Cross Club, and Angela Nelson, 2009-10 American Red Cross/NAIA Youth Leadership Student Athlete. Nelson is a student at Point Park University, Pittsburgh.
In presenting the award, Red Cross officials cited:
The school’s National Honor Society sponsors two blood drives during the school year. Year after year the student leadership has demonstrated a true sense of maturity. They help raise awareness of the ongoing need of blood and blood products by assisting in identifying blood recipients at the school and also recruiting double red cell donors. The March 1, 2010, blood drive was In Honor of Mr. Nicholson, a teacher at the school who recently lost his battle with cancer. For the past several years they have donated their excess food, usually a car load, from the blood drive for use during local disasters. Several students from the school have sponsored very productive summer scholarship drives. During the past two years the school’s drives have netted 548 units of blood.
“Recipients of these awards were selected by a group of Red Cross volunteers and staff members, and represent the highest quality of service to the Red Cross and hospital patients,” commented Ken Martin, chair of the region’s volunteer board of directors.
This year’s honorees are from or headquartered in the following counties:
