William L. Lanager, 90, of Clearfield died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016 at Ridgeview Elder Care. Mr. Lanager was born Sept. 28, 1925 in Clearfield, the son of Chester A. and Helen (Carr) Lanager.
He graduated from the Clearfield Area High School in 1943. He had worked for the NYC Railroad and then started to work at Clearfield Electric Cooperative in 1946 as a grounds-man.
When they became United Electric Cooperative, he was transferred to DuBois as a purchasing agent. He retired in 1987 after 41 years of service.
Mr. Lanager was very involved with the Clearfield County Fair, starting at the age of 12 and blowing up Mickey Mouse ballo0ns at the penny pinch stand; he also worked as a night watchman at some stands.
At age 21, he started various jobs, which included ticket taker for rides and shows, usher in the grandstand, grounds crew and 29 years on the electric crew for a total of 70 years working at the fair.
He was also very active in the Old Town Sportsmen Club, serving on the board of directors for seven years; vice president for one year; president for three years and secretary for 40 years for a total of 51 years as an officer. He assisted the fish wardens for 31 years in stocking trout in area streams.
He was a member of the West Side United Methodist Church and a life-time member of the Third Ward Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Doris M. (Learish) Lanager, to whom he was married Jan. 20, 1945; two children, Caren L. Conrow of Webster, NY and Charles A. Lanager and his wife, Deborah L. of Greensburg; and three grandchildren, Christopher A. Conrow of Webster, NY., and Sean William and Marta M. Lanager, both of Greensburg.
Mr. Lanager was the last member of his generation. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Christopher, a brother, Jack A. Lanager and a son-in-law, Craig G. Conrow.
Honoring Mr. Lanager’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. A Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 100 W. Station Square Dr., Suite 500, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
