Mary J. Granite, 92, of Clarence died peacefully Friday, Aug. 5, 2016 at Centre Crest in Bellefonte.
Born Aug. 21, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Matthew J. and Anna M. Smolko Murgas.
On Feb. 2, 1941 at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Clarence, she married Andrew A. Granite. He preceded her in death on June 20, 1997.
Mrs. Granite attended the Cherry Run School. She was a member of the Queen of Archangels Roman Catholic Parish Church in Clarence.
She also attended the St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Clarence. She had a strong faith in God and said the rosary every day.
She was a member of the Rosary Society, Jednota Lodge and Clarence American Legion Auxiliary.
She enjoyed playing all kinds of card games, playing bingo, puzzles and baking. She loved growing flowers and working in her flower gardens.
She looked forward to Sundays when her family would come for dinner and she would make all their favorite foods, especially homemade soup. She felt it was very important for a lady to dress like a lady, wearing dresses and jewelry, even to the grocery store.
She is survived by her son, John Granite and his wife, Poppy of Ocean City, Md.; her three daughters, Dorothy Onder and her husband, John of Clarence, Judy Kuhani and her husband, Hiram of Kauai Hawaii and Patsy Guthrie of Bellefonte; two brothers, John Murgas of Kylertown and George Murgas of State College; and two sisters, Helen Chambers and Dorothy Koleno, both of Clarence.
Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She was very proud that she was able to see five generations in her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She will be truly missed by all that knew her.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew, Joseph and Michael, four sisters, Anna Soltis, Agnes Solomon, Margaret Danko and Pauline Murgas and one grandson, Shane Granite.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Wednesday with a Ladies Auxiliary service at 4 p.m. at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, 106 W. Sycamore St., Snow Shoe.
Funeral services will follow at the funeral home with Father Will Rupp officiating. Burial will be private at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Clarence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Centre Crest Employee Fund, 502 E. Howard St., Bellefonte, PA 16823.
