HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane’s office today announced criminal charges have been filed against 17 individuals accused of distributing or possessing illegal drugs in Centre County.
A year-long investigation that culminated in today’s charges focused on street-level dealers accused of distributing prescription narcotics, cocaine, LSD, synthetic marijuana and marijuana. Additional criminal charges were also filed involving firearms violations, theft and other criminal offenses.
The investigation was conducted by the Centre County Drug Task Force, which is a collaborative effort between agents with the Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Narcotics Investigation and local authorities, including the office of Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller.
“This investigation should serve as a reminder that we are working throughout the Commonwealth to root out individuals who sell these deadly drugs for their own gain,” Kane said. “We are working each and every day to battle the drug epidemic and to safeguard our communities.”
“This is just part of the proactive approach we are taking to deal with our drug problems,” Parks Miller said. “We need to treat addicts and disrupt the drug trade, which is literally killing people at increasing numbers. If you bring poison to our community, there will be serious consequences.”
Law enforcement officials used various tools, including surveillance techniques and undercover purchases, as they worked to file charges in this investigation.
Investigators also made a series of controlled purchases utilizing confidential informants and undercover officers/agents. Controlled purchases were made in State College, Bellefonte and other surrounding municipalities. The investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected as a result.
Those who have been charged in connection with this investigation are being sought on active arrest warrants.
Kane thanked the following agencies for their work on the investigation: the Centre County District Attorney’s Office, the State College Police Department, the Patton Township Police Department, the Ferguson Township Police Department, the Spring Township Police Department, the Bellefonte Police Department and the Penn State University Police Department.
The defendants will be preliminarily arraigned before Centre County Magisterial District Judge Carmine Prestia and will be prosecuted by the Centre County District Attorney’s Office.
