Federal safety regulators are investigating a fatal crash that killed a Tesla driver who was using the company’s autopilot mode.
The crash occurred on May 7 in Williston, Florida. The crash occurred when a tractor-trailer made a left turn in front of the Tesla at an intersection on a non-controlled access highway, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
According to Tesla, its autopilot system did not recognize the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake wasn’t activated. It also noted that this is the first known fatality in just over 130 million miles when autopilot was activated.
