When Robert E. Stackowitz escaped from a Georgia prison infirmary, Lyndon Johnson was president and the Beatles were still together.
Stackowitz was finally recaptured Monday in Connecticut, the U.S. Marshals Service said in a statement.
A break in the case came after investigators found a possible alias that Stackowitz was using. He had spent nearly 48 years on the lam.
“Investigators then discovered an address in Sherman, Connecticut, which was linked to the alias,” the service said. “U.S. Marshals in the District of Connecticut acted upon this information and were able to locate and arrest Stackowitz without incident.”
He’s in jail in Connecticut awaiting extradition back to Georgia.
Stackowitz escaped on August 22, 1968, after being sentenced to 17 years for robbery by force, according to authorities. He fled the infirmary at the Carroll County Prison Work Camp, southwest of Atlanta.
