WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Thursday U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-5) announced the 5th District winners of the 2016 Congressional Art Competition.
The annual competition allows young artists to submit their work before an independent panel. The first place winner has the opportunity to have his or her artwork on display in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
The second place artist will have their work displayed in Thompson’s Washington, D.C. office, while the artwork which placed third will be displayed at one of his district offices.
This year’s first place winner, Madelyn Ostermann of Summit Township, Erie County was chosen for her drawing entitled, “Yellow Transportation.” Ostermann attends Fort LeBoeuf High School in Waterford.
“Each year I am amazed by the quality of each submission, this year is no different. We have so many talented young artists in the Congressional District,” Thompson said.
“I am pleased to announce this year’s winner Madelyn Ostermann, who attends LeBoeuf High School in Waterford. This is the second year she has placed in the competition, and I look forward to welcoming Madelyn and her family to Washington, D.C. to view her work on display in the U.S. Capitol.”
Willow Felver, who also attends Fort LeBoeuf High School, placed second in the competition with her drawing, entitled “Uncle Bill.”
Third place was awarded to Brina Carfley Bickel of Clearfield High School, for her colored pencil drawing, entitled “Captain Jack.”
Honorable mentions were awarded to Dannielle D’Amico of Fort LeBoeuf High School, Kassidy Steffy of Bald Eagle Area High School and Meghan Hephner of Curwensville High School.
All of the artwork submitted to the competition will be on display on Saturday, April 30, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. at Fort LeBoeuf High School in Waterford, Erie County.
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to recognize and encourage artistic talent among U.S. high school students.
