Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday that Bernie Sanders can’t win the Democratic nomination, but he won’t call on the Vermont senator to quit the race.
Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, the Nevada senator was asked if he thought Sanders had a path to the presidential nomination.
“No, I don’t,” Reid replied.
Reid said he was comfortable with Sanders’ vow to take the campaign to the convention in July, saying he “should do what he has to do.”
Reid, who has endorsed front-runner Hillary Clinton, also said he did not have any concerns with Sanders continuing after Tuesday’s primaries, adding that Sanders’ tone and message have been constructive so far.
Sanders acknowledged on CNN’s “New Day” earlier Tuesday that he has a “narrow path” to the nomination but said he will remain in until at least June 7, when the last primaries are held.
And his wife, Jane Sanders, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Tuesday afternoon that her husband plans to continue fighting for his agenda even after the convention. But if he does not secure the nomination, he will “help make Secretary Clinton an even better candidate in the general election,” she said.
