CURWENSVILLE – Playing flawless defense and cracking out nine hits along with some good pitching all led to the Curwensville girls softball team down visiting Purchase Line Monday afternoon, 11-1.
The game was called in the bottom half of the sixth inning when the Lady Tide pushed run number 11 across home plate which brought out the 10-run mercy rule.
The Lady Red Dragons beat the Lady Tide earlier in April, at Purchase Line, by a score of 4-2.
Curwensville scored all the runs they would need in the second inning, with four tallies, as singles by Emily Miller and Madison Bumbarger along with two base on balls then topped off by a Hannah Dixon triple to centerfield did the trick.
Four base on balls and a single by Kayli Sedgwick helped Curwensville pick up two more runs in the bottom of the third frame to stretch its margin to 6-0.
The Lady Red Dragons got their lone run in the top of the fourth, but by then the Lady Tide rout was on.
In the Tide’s half of the fourth another run came home, but it was the three scores in the bottom of the fifth that put the battle away.
The fifth inning saw doubles by Rylee Young and Kaylee Harnett, with a bunt single by Madison Bumbarger and a walk fuel the offense, building a 10-1 margin.
Curwensville scored the game ending run in the bottom of the sixth on three more walks and another single by Madison Bumbarger.
On the afternoon Bumbarger had three hits while Sedgwick and Young each had two to pace the Curwensville attack.
Curwensville ended up with nine hits and was greatly helped by receiving 10 walks.
Young, from the circle, allowed just five hits while striking out nine in picking up her sixth win.
Allen Leigey, Lady Tide head coach, said after the game, “The big thing is that coming into this game I challenged our team, and every time I challenge them they seem to rise to the occasion, and today they did.”
The Lady Tide offense finally scored some big numbers, which Leigey commented about, saying, “We have been hitting the ball fairly well but just haven’t scored many runs so it was nice to see the double digits this afternoon.”
The Lady Tide, now 6-3 on the year, travel to Johnsonburg on Wednesday afternoon for a 4:15 pm contest against the Ramettes.
Curwensville defeated the Ramettes back on April 5, in Johnsonburg, 3-2.
