HERSHEY — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team saw a successful 2015-16 dual meet season come to an an end on Saturday evening at the Giant Center in Hershey. Central Dauphin, one of the more storied programs in recent history and winners of four state team wrestling titles, handed the Bison a 50-19 blow and will move on to the consolation semifinals at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
The Bison finished their regular season with a 15-5 record overall, a second place finish in the Mountain League with a 5-1 mark, and their first win ever at Hershey in the state team wrestling championships.
The consolation quarterfinal match started well enough for the Bison,s they were only down 20-19 after eight matches, but Central Dauphin laid the wood to them in the second half of the bout by picking up four falls and two regular decisions to close it out.
Tallin Norris (18-17) picked up a fall over Joey Stoaks at 145 pounds when he mixed him while down 8-2. Norris was one of three Bison to go 3-0 at Hershey, the others being Luke McGonigal and Travis Ogden.
McGonigal had a quick 41 second fall over Brenden George to up his record to 31-2 on the year.
Wisor, who went 2-1 at Hershey to go to 20-12 on the year, decisioned Hunter Neilsen 2-1 at 195.
And at 220, Ogden major decisioned JP Marrero 12-2 to run his record to 30-1. That win brought the Bison to within one point in the dual, but then the bottom fell out and Central Dauphin began their run at 285 right through to 132.
The Bison will now have two full weeks to prepare for the individual post-season as they will host the District 9 Championship on February 27 in the Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium.
The District 1 Boyertown Bears (22-0), which defeated the Bison 60-12 in the opening round on Thursday, will look for their first ever state dual title when they battle District 11 champ Bethlehem Catholic (19-1) in Saturday’s 1:00 p.m. championship match. Bethlehem Catholic’s lone loss on the year is to national power Blair Academy from New Jersey.
On the AA side, District 9 champion Brookville (24-0), after defeating perennial power Reynolds 29-27 in the semifinals, will look for their second state title when they face District 11 champion Saucon Valley (21-0) in the finals. Brookville won the inaugural PIAA Team Wrestling title back in 1999 and placed fourth in 2012.
