Although West Virginia has a population of only 1.8 million, the state contributes a significant portion of the energy consumed in the Eastern U.S. The state is No. 2 in coal production behind Wyoming; No. 3 in the most forested states in the lower 48; No. 4 in net electricity exports behind Pennsylvania, Alabama and Illinois; and No. 10 in natural gas production.
