CURWENSVILLE – The Mountain Laurel Kennel Club is partnering with the Clearfield-Jefferson Chapter of the American Red Cross to raise $1,100 for dog and cat CPR mannequins at the club’s annual pie sale, slated for Nov. 22 at Goodman’s Foodliner on State Street, Curwensville, beginning at 9 a.m.
A variety of homemade pies will be sold for $8 each and cash donations will also be gratefully accepted, noted pie sale chairwoman Val Swales.
“In fact, we’re hoping donors step forward even before the sale with funds. Being the beginning of the holidays, it would be nice to make a donation in memory or honor of a special pet,” she said.
The mannequins, one dog and one cat, look very much like high quality stuffed animals, except they are fitted with equipment to facilitate CPR. Life-like and life-size, they are not the typical Rescusi-Anne with fur, Swales noted.
According to Barb Richards, executive assistant at the Clearfield-Jefferson Chapter, ARC, Pet First Aid courses teach students, in addition to CPR, how to assemble a pet first aid kit, emergency preparedness planning for pets and all aspects of approaching, securing and administering first aid to an injured dog or cat.
This is the third year emergency services will benefit from pie sale proceeds. Two years ago, the club partnered with the former CSB Bank to buy a protective vest for K9 Officer Zeus of the Curwensville Police Department and, last year, all area emergency medical services received animal oxygen masks courtesy of the sale.
To make a donation prior to the pie sale, please mail checks to MLKC Treasurer Sandy Malinich, PO Box 155, Hyde, 16843.
