HYDE — Despite the treacherous weather to portions of the state on Friday in to Saturday, nine of the 13 teams slated for the 8th Annual Bison Duals were in attendance at Clearfield Area Junior-Senior High School on Saturday.
When three teams (Altoona, Penn Cambria, and Southern Huntingdon) were forced to pull out on Friday, the tourney had to be re-drawn. Then, when one team (Valley), just didn’t show up Saturday morning, the tourney once again had to be re-figured.
Basically, the Duals became six rounds of pool action, which set up the teams for the medal round of matches.
The host Bison went 4-0 in pool play, which slated them in the championship finals against the 2015 Bison Dual runners-up, Montoursville, which was also 4-0 in pool matches.
Clearfield defeated Port Allegany 57-16, James M. Coughlin 63-15, General McLane (the 2015 champions) 46-21, and Curwensville 64-15 to reach their first finals since 2011.
The dual meet against Port marked the 1,000th all-time in Bison wrestling history. The Bison wrestling all-time record currently stands at 755-240-9, according to Jessica Shirey, secretary for the Clearfield wrestling program.
Because of the (un)luck of the draw, Curwensville (0-4) wrestled the top four finishers in the tourney and ended up having to settle for ninth place. In addition to Clearfield, their results were 64-12 against Montoursville, 66-8 against West Branch, and 61-14 against General McLane.
In the championship finals, Montoursville was unkind to their hosts and defeated the Bison 57-13 for their first Bison Duals crown.
The battle for third place was between the two 3-1 teams from pool matches – West Branch and General McLane. The Warriors won the team title in 2014, while the Lancers won last year. This year the tight battle went to West Branch 39-31.
Butler defeated Port Allegany 42-30 for fifth place and DuBois handled Coughlin 57-21 for seventh place.
