CLEARFIELD – At a special meeting Monday night, the Clearfield Area School District Board of Directors unanimously appointed Dr. Richard C. Makin, as the district’s new superintendent. Makin, who currently serves as the superintendent of the Purchase Line Area School District, will step into his new position in January.
Board Vice President Dave Glass said the board was “comfortable” with Makin from the start.
“It was unanimous among the board, since he first showed interest,” he said. “He was easily the most qualified individual that we interviewed.”
Board Member Larry Putt’s comments echoed that of Glass, as he said Makin was “above all the others.”
“(Makin) is going to be a big asset to the district. Educational-wise, I think we’ll see a big difference,” he said.
Glass said Makin instituted some great programs during his 5-plus year tenure at Purchase Line and said he looks forward to him joining the staff in Clearfield. He said Makin also served as the director of the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center.
In a statement, Makin said he, too, looks forward to working with the district’s students, faculty and staff as well as the parents and community. He also said he will work with the administrative team and the Board of Education in an effort to guarantee that all Clearfield students are afforded opportunities to succeed and do succeed and are ultimately prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
“For things to happen, we must continue doing well the many things that are already working throughout the district,” he said, adding “At the same time, we have an obligation to identify problem areas and implement practices that will enable our students to succeed.
“As is always the case in public education, we must continue addressing the added challenge of doing what works for our students while staying attentive to district finances.”
Makin said he appreciated the opportunity to serve as the next superintendent. He also said he foresees a positive future ahead.
“I am confident that by working together, we will create a bright tomorrow for all of the students in the Clearfield Area School District,” he said.
Makin will act in the capacity of superintendent for a period of 4 ½ years, starting Jan. 20, 2009. His term extends until June 30, 2013.
In closing, Glass noted that the board didn’t intend to “harm another neighboring school district.”
He said the district will help Purchase Line so that their transition is as seemingless as possible for them.
