CLEARFIELD – Five Clearfield Area High School senior basketball players, two boys and three girls, have been named District 9 League All-Stars for the 2009-10 season.
Bisons Trey Campman and Chad Zurat and Lady Bisons Amber Byerly, Gwenn Porter and Madison Sopic were selected by the coaches for berths on the 10-player all-star teams announced at the league banquet in Ridgway Monday night.
Zurat, a 6-2 guard-forward, led the Bisons in scoring with 378 points, a 15.8 average that ranked No. 13 in District 9, and rebounds with 181.
His shooting percentages were outstanding as he made 120 of 243 two-pointers for 49 percent, 15 of 40 three-pointers for 38 percent and 93 of 122 free throws for 76 percent.
Campman, a 6-1 guard who missed three games because of an ankle injury, tallied 214 points for a 10.2 average.
Clearfield finished third in the league at 8-4 and was 13-11 overall in coach Forrest Campman’s ninth season, losing to Bradford in the District 9 Class AAA title game and to Erie Central Tech in a PIAA tournament play-in game.
Four members of the league champion Bradford Owls were honored, Dave “Pug” Fuhrman (400 points, 16 points per game), Ryan Mackey (263, 10.5), Evan Kline (239, 9.5) and Mike White (150, 6.3). Fuhrman ranked 10th in points and 12th in average in D-9.
Robby Wortman (457, 15.2) of league and District 9 Class A runner-up Elk County Catholic was named Most Valuable Player. District-wide, he was No. 16 in average with the fourth highest point total.
Rounding out the all-senior boys team are ECC’s Joe Jacob (226, 7.5), Punxsutawney’s Dane Kopas (359, 17.1) and Brookville’s Chad Brocious (303, 12.1). Kopas’ average was No. 8 in D-9.
Sopic (260), Porter (251)and Byerly (223) combined for 735 points for the Lady Bisons, who wound up fourth in the league at 6-6 and lost to Punxsutawney in the District 9 Class AAA semifinal for a 15-8 finish in coach Joey Castagnolo’s 11th season.
Clearfield had the league’s top backcourt duo in Sopic and Porter, who were No. 19 and No. 24 in the district in scoring average at 11.3 and 10.8 respectively.
Both did much more than put up points, though.
Sopic, a 5-9 guard, topped the Lady Bisons in steals with 72 and was second in rebounds with 135 and assists with 65.
Porter, a 5-6 playmaker, was the assist leader with 90, second in steals with 61 and third in rebounds with 78.
Byler, a 5-9 forward, was Clearfield’s main force in the post, pulling down 208 missed shots and blocking 30 shots in addition to average 9.7 points.
Scoring machine Kayla Hoohuli was named the Most Valuable Player for the third year in a row after leading St. Marys to a share of the league title with Elk County Catholic and the District 9 Class AAA championship. The 5-8 junior pumped in 757 points for a 30.3 average and has amassed 1,951 points in her career.
Punxsutawney, third in the league and runner-up to St. Marys in the 9-AAA Playoffs, had three juniors honored in Hannah Neal (297, 11.9), Jenna Reitz (242, 9.7) and Shawnna Crago (210, 9.6). Neal was tied for No. 14 in average in D-9.
The other all-stars are Elk County Catholic’s Emily Detsch (492, 17.6), DuBois’ Kirsten Wilcox (283, 13.4) and Brookville’s Brynna Hetrick (225, 10.2). Detsch was No. 4 and Wilcox No. 11 in D-9 scoring.
