CURWENSVILLE — Kane’s height and athleticism were too much for the Curwensville Area High School girls basketball team Friday night.
Sophomore Trinity Clark had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while junior Camryn Cummings turned in a solid all-around performance that included 12 points and eight steals as the Lady Wolves won the Allegheny Mountain League crossover scrap 49-23 in Patton Hall.
Most of Kane’s 22 field goals came right under the rim, resulting in a 45.8 shooting percentage, and that would have been even higher if not for several misses on close-range attempts.
The Lady Tide were a step behind on many of the set plays that the Lady Wolves worked to near perfection against man defense.
“It was nothing we hadn’t covered in practice,” first-year Curwensville coach Eric Duriancik said. “You can go over it until you’re blue in the face, but sometimes it just doesn’t matter because they’re better at executing than you are.
“They have a bunch of solid athletes and they played a really good game. They took advantage of the turnovers we had.”
Each team surrendered possession 29 times without getting a shot, but the majority of the Lady Tide’s were caused by great anticipation on the part of the Lady Wolves, who constantly stepped into passing lanes for steals.
Four players got into the scoring act to give Kane (3-2) eight points before Christine Limbert flipped in a putback with 3:15 left in the first period.
Curwensville (0-4) never got any closer, beginning the third and fourth quarters with scoring droughts of 6:11 and 5:14, respectively.
The Lady Wolves pushed the margin to 30-14 at intermission and were up 37-19 after the low-scoring third quarter.
Limbert just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Tide, who had difficulty breaking down the Lady Wolves’ zone and made only eight of 45 field goal attempts for 18 percent.
Duriancik was partially satisfied with the pre-game goals of playing hard and smart.
“In small doses, small spots, we saw improvement from Monday to Friday,” he said.
“They played very hard in short spurts. We just have to get more sure of ourselves. We’re thinking a lot, and that makes us slow.
“I don’t think it’s time to blow up the entire ship yet, but I’ve got to get better at what I’m teaching, and we have to get better at what we’re executing.
“We just have to keep building.”
Kane’s junior varsity won 46-5.
Curwensville will be at home again Monday to take on Ridgway in an AML South Division game.
