CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville high school softball squad won its second game in two tries on the new season with a 10-0 shutout over visiting Ridgway Thursday afternoon.
It was also two shutouts in a row for senior pitcher Holly Lansberry, who threw another one hit, twelve strikeout performance. Lansberry struck out the first nine batters she faced and lost her bid for a no-hitter when Elker Chelsea Bryndel singled with one out in the top of the fifth.
The Lady Tide used a monster second inning to put the game out of reach for the Lady Elkers as Curwensville tallied nine runs in their half of the second stanza.
A three run homer over the left field fence by Tide senior third baseman Jenessa Stiles highlighted the run fest in the second. Head coach Allen Leigey of Curwensville was impressed, “Jenessa really gave the ball a ride. It was well hit and cleared the fence by plenty.”
Curwensville would pick up a run in the third to invoke the mercy rule after four and half innings, making short work of Ridgway.
In the process the Lady Tide had five extra base hits, including the round tripper by Stiles, as left fielder Sara Clark had two doubles, shortstop Shannon McDonald picked up a two bagger and centerfielder Tess Bloom stroked a triple. McDonald and Jenessa Stiles each had three RBI’s.
The Tide had nine hits in the abbreviated game as Clark and catcher Ashley Demchak each had two hits. For Demchak that’s now five hits in the first two games.
Leigey liked the way his team smacked the ball, “We didn’t mess around today. We went right at them with our strong hitting once again. Today our hitting produced the kind of run production we expect.”
The Tide (2-0) will now travel to Johnsonburg on Monday for a 4:15 pm contest.
Friday’s home game against Glendale will be moved to a later date in April.
