In a game that many people expected to lack the scoring of last season\’s meeting, the DuBois Beavers exploded for 35 second half points to storm past the hometown Clearfield Bisons in front of a large opening night crowd at the Bisons Sports Complex. The Beavers were paced by senior quarterback Josh Means, who accounted for two touchdown and over 200 total yards. Senior running back Cam Kelly also added 90 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns.
\”They made some big plays in the third quarter, and we made some mistakes. We are a young team, things like this are going to happen. You have to remember this was the first time on the field for alot of our players,\” said Clearfield Head Coach Tim Janocko.
The Bisons got on the board early by scoring on their opening drive. Sophomore quarterback Curtis Frye looked sharp on his first snaps as the Bisons starting signal caller leading the offense 74 yards by completing his only attempt of the drive to senior wideout Trey Campman. Campman capped of the drive with a 3 yard touchdown plunge with 8:02 remaining in the first quarter.
Campman added yet another strong performance under his belt against the rival Beavers hauling in 6 balls for a game high 133 yards and a touchdown while he also added another touchdown on the ground.
\”Trey is a playmaker. He just makes plays, and we got the ball in his hands a couple different ways. He\’s just a good player,\” said Janocko.
Frye added his first career touchdown with under 30 seconds remaining in the first half. The Bisons were set up with great field position as senior defensive lineman Andre Buck recovered a fumble on the Beavers 48 yard line. Frye scrambled right outside the pocket before finding a wide open Derek Danver in the back of the endzone for a 10 yard touchdown giving Clearfield a 13-0 halftime lead. Danver finished the night with 39 yards receiving and also added a 2 point conversion.
\”We played a real good first half. Derek and Trey both made some big catches, and Curtis played well,\” commented Janocko.
Unfortunately for the Bisons the momentum swung in the opposite direction fast. The Beavers scored on three consecutive possessions to start the second half. Cam Kelly, Josh Means, and Adam Sanko all ran for touchdowns. Two of the touchdowns were set up by interceptions by the Beavers defense.
\”Curtis made great reads most of the game. He\’s gonna make mistakes, he\’s still a young quarterback. This was his first varsity start. He will be fine, he\’s a heck of a player,\” said Janocko of his sophomore quarterbacks first game.
The Bisons were able to add one more score late in the game as Frye found Campman on a fade route in the fourth quarter.
\”We came into the game knowing we were undersized. We just got worn down as the game went on. I\’m happy with how we played. I mean no one likes to lose, but if there\’s a silver lining it\’s that we fought our way back and got it to within a touchdown. We had a chance to win the entire game. People have to remember we are a young team, maybe the youngest we\’ve put on the field in a long time. This was only our first game, we will be fine,\” remarked Janocko.
DuBois added the game sealing touchdown on 34 yard touchdown run by Kelly.
The Bison will be at home again next week as they take on the P-O Mounties (1-0) with kickoff scheduled for 7 PM
Notes: Friday\’s game marked Tim Janockos 25th season as the Bisons Head Coach…..Campman\’s 36 yard catch on the first drive of the game was his first reception from a quarterback other than his brother Jarrin who graduated last season….the Beavers posted 35 points against the Bisons for the 2nd straight season after only scoring a total of 42 in their previous two meetings…..Clearfield showed their variation of the wildcat offense on 9 different occasions with Campman lining up as quarterback.
