Clearfield won their 7th straight Purchase Line Lion\’s Club Holiday Tournament Championship with a hard fought 40-36 victory over the Purchase Line Red Dragons on Tuesday night. Chad Zurat paced the Bisons with 10 points while Ben Johnson and Trey Campman chipped in with nine and eight points respectively.
For the second straight night the Bisons struggled offensively in the first quarter as they fell behind to a 14-7 deficit. Campman paced the Bisons in the frame by knocking down two baskets for five points. The Red Dragons used very balanced scoring in the frame with four different Purchase Line ballers netting baskets.
Both teams scored evenly in the second quarter, and early in the frame it looked as if the Bisons had a chance to take the lead after back to back buckets by Robbie Myers and Andrew Redden. However the Red Dragons would finish the half strong and go into the intermission with a 24-18 lead.
In the second half the Bisons turned up the intensity forcing numerous Purchase Line turnovers before going on an eight to nothing run and outscoring the home team 14-4 in the third period. At the end of the quarter the Bisons went into the fourth frame with a three point lead at 31-28. Six different players in the Red and Black scored buckets in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter the lead changed numerous times before Ben Johnson put the Bisons up for good knocking down a 3-pointer with only a little over a minute remaining putting the Bisons up 37-36, and for good measure Johnson added another basket and a free throw to set the final score at 40-36.
Clearfield will be back in action next Wednesday, January 6, when they travel to Ridgway.
