RIDGWAY – The Curwensville Lady Tide added another notch to their winning streak Wednesday afternoon as they crushed Ridgway 21-0. With the road victory the Tide softballers improve their 2008 record to 17-1. The Tide had already blasted Ridgway earlier this season 18-0.
Head coach of the Lady Tide, Allen Leigey, reached his own personal milestone with career victory number 100. Coach Leigey was delighted about the milestone, but put it in true perspective, “The win is obviously pretty special, but in reality coaches don’t win anything, players do. All we try to do is prepare our kids to win. To give them a chance to win. I don’t win a game, they do.”
Curwensville has now outscored their opponents 193-3 since losing to Clearfield 5-1 in the second game of the year. They have now shutout their opposition in 14 games this year.
This game had a life of only three innings as the Lady Tide exploded for three in the first, 10 in the second and eight in the third. In the seventeen wins this year for Curwensville, thirteen have now ended by the mercy rule being invoked.
Curwensville coupled 14 hits with 12 walks and three Ridgway errors to produce the offensive outburst. Ashley Demchak and Erin Bressler powered the offense as Demchak had four hits and five RBI’s, while Bressler added three hits and four RBI’s. Shannon McDonald and Tess Bloom both had two hits with McDonald driving in two teammates. Stacey Johnson also picked up two RBI’s in the one sided slug fest.
The only extra base hits were two doubles by the sizzling Demchak.
Ridgway’s lone hit was a one out single in the first inning by catcher Emily Mitchell.
The Lady Tide visit Elk County Catholic (ECC) Thursday afternoon in St. Marys. Curwensville beat ECC back on April 10th, 6-0.
NOTES: The Curwensville-DuBois Central Catholic game that was rained out on Monday will not be rescheduled.
The Lady Tide have been afforded the number one seed in the District 9 A playoffs that start next week. Curwensville will receive a bye in the first round and will take on the winner of the DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) and Clarion-Limestone (C-L) winner. DCC and C-L will play Monday.
The Tide will meet the winner next Wednesday, at home, starting at 4:30 pm at Riverside Stadium.
Smethport (16-1) is the number two seed with Northern Potter (14-3) at the three spot and Elk County Catholic (13-4) at the four seed. Twelve squads have entered this year seasons A playoffs.
Curwensville is the defending District 9 and PIAA Class A Champions after going 25-2 in 2007.
