HYDE – Laurel Eye Clinic of Brookville struck for five runs in the first inning and right-hander Chase Lyle muffled Clearfield\’s bats for the second time this season as the visitors defeated the Chiefs 6-3 in Jefferson County Legion League action at the Bison Sports Complex Monday evening.
Lyle scattered seven hits, three by Jarrin Campman and two by Aaron Sayers, and was aided by double plays that snuffed out Clearfield comeback hopes in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Chiefs, who dropped to 5-4 in the JCL and 5-5 overall, scored two runs in the third inning on a walk to Wil Bacharach, opposite-field singles by Kyle Timchak and Campman and an RBI-groundout by Parker Herrington.
Manager Sid Lansberry\’s Post No. 6 team didn\’t get another run to second base until the seventh, when Corey Bookhamer\’s infield single, a walk to Timchak and a single up the middle by Campman loaded the bases, bringing the tying run to the plate with one out.
Herrington bounced into a forceout for his second RBI before Kyle Kline grounded into a game-ending forceout.
Lyle aided his own cause with a three-run double to the right center gap that featured the first-inning uprising by Laurel Eye Clinic, which improved to 4-5 in the JCL and 4-8 for the season.
Three walks and a Clearfield misplay preceded Lyle\’s key blow, and Nick Bishop followed with a looping single to short right center to make it 5-0.
Herrington limited the winners to four hits and one run over the last six innings. He struck out 10 batters and walked six.
Punxsutawney will provide the opposition for Clearfield\’s 6 p.m. home game Wednesday.
