REYNOLDSVILLE – The Clearfield Chiefs missed an opportunity to cement their grip on third place in the Jefferson County Legion Baseball League Thursday evening when they were edged 6-5 by last-place Reynoldsville.
The hosts bunched their runs in the third and fourth innings for their first on-field victory of the season. Reynoldsville\’s other win was a forfeit over Curwensville.
The Post No. 6 Chiefs, who dropped to 6-5 in the JCL and 6-10 overall, had plenty of runners with eight hits, seven walks and two hit batsmen, but they stranded 12.
Reynoldsville southpaw Jeremy Grove, who started for Clearfield in last weekend\’s Bellefonte Showdown XXVI, pitched in and out of trouble before posting the complete game performance.
Two walks by losing pitcher Parker Herrington, Grove\’s two-run double and an error gave Reynoldsville a 3-1 lead in the third.
The Chiefs answered with three in the fourth. Two-out singles by Corey Bookhamer and Jarrin Campman around a free pass to Justin Hoffman filled the sacks. Bookhamer scored on an error before Grove hit Adam Jury and Derek Danver to force in runs.
Reynoldsville came right back as Kyle Mann singled across one run and Andy Malmgren rapped a two-run homer to right field for what proved to be the game-winning hit.
In the seventh, two walks and an RBI-single by Campman got the Chiefs close, but Grove got the final out with the tying run at second base.
Campman and James Zimmermann had two hits apiece for the Chiefs.
Herrington held Reynoldsville to five hits. He struck out 10 and walked four.
Clearfield will be at home against Curwensville in a 5 p.m. game Saturday and will travel to Brookville for a 6 p.m. twinbill Tuesday. The first game is the completion of their June 3 meeting that was suspended in the second inning because of rain.
The Chiefs\’ rainout at DuBois Monday will be rescheduled at a later date.
