COUDERSPORT – Minutes after the Clearfield Babe Ruth League 13-15 All-Stars forged a 2-2 tie in the top of the fourth inning Saturday, Potter-McKean answered with eight runs on seven hits for a 10-2 win in the District 8 Tournament elimination bracket final at the Coudersport Area Recreation Park Field.
Potter/McKean, in turn, was ousted in the elimination bracket final by Williamsport West End, 14-3 in six innings.
West End gained a rematch with State College, which had won their winner\’s bracket final 7-6 in nine innings.
However, the championship game was rained out Sunday with State College leading 9-3 in the fourth inning.
State College (2-0) was declared the District 8 champion, but West End (2-1) will represent the district in this week\’s state tourney because State College is the host team. The nine-team event gets under way Wednesday.
Clearfield was 0-2 with its other loss 6-4 to State College in the first round.
Manager Sid Lansberry\’s team mustered only four hits off winner Camrin Stuckey, who struck out seven and walked four in five innings. Ryan Austin fanned two and walked one in two hitless innings of relief.
Stuckey also starred with the bat for Potter/McKean (1-2) with four hits, including a solo home run, two runs driven in and three runs scored.
Stuckey, Kevin Wolflinger and Colin Strawcutter, the 2-3-4 hitters in the winners\’ lineup, were 9-for-12 with five RBIs.
Stuckey singled, stole second and scored on a single by Strawcutter in the first inning and pounded his home in the third for a 2-1 lead.
Clearfield got even both times.
In the third, Derek Danver singled up the middle to plate Isaac Butler, who was at second via a walk and a stolen base.
In the fourth, Luke Peterson had a clutch two-out double down the right field line for an RBI. Curtis Frye was hit by a pitch and sacrificed to second by Matt Lonjin.
Starter Isaac Butler was unable to get an out in the lower fourth, though an error helped Potter/McKean get rolling.
Taylor Hathaway and Vince Marzo followed with RBI-singles. Another run scored when Clearfield failed to get an out on Dillan Wadsworth\’s grounder. Then, Stuckey singled in another run to chase Butler.
Wolflinger greeted Frye with a two-run single. With the bases loaded, Frye and Tyler Jacobson each walked in a run.
