JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg junior Matt Shuey scored 22 of his game high 32 points in the first half Friday night as the Rams cruised to a 63-45 victory over Curwensville in boys basketball at Johnsonburg.
The Rams, still undefeated in Allegheny Mountain League action at 7-0, pushed their overall record to 12-4, while the Tide slipped to 5-12. It was the fifth straight win for Johnsonburg and the fifth straight defeat for the visiting Golden Tide.
Shuey poured in 12 first quarter points as the Rams opened up a 19-7 lead after the first eight minutes of play. The 6’ 2” forward then dumped in another 10 in the second period as the Rams took a 32-20 halftime lead.
The Golden Tide had a go to guy also in David Kalgren as the senior guard dueled Shuey fairly even as he scorched the nets for 27 himself. Kalgren hit five treys on the night to help keep the score somewhat respectable for Curwensville. In fact Kalgren had all eight points in the third period for the Tide.
Johnsonburg outscored the Tide in the final sixteen minutes 33-25 to erase any hopes of a Tide comeback.
The Tide had seven three pointers in all while the Rams only could connect on one from downtown.
Seth Streich helped teammate Shuey as he added 10 points on the night.
