Clearfield—Clearfield was able to pick up their second win of the season in their District 9 League opener against Punxsutawney Friday night at Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium. The Bison were able to put together their best performance of the season so far against the Chucks according to Coach Campman, “ I thought we played pretty good defense tonight, and controlled the boards pretty well. Our press hurt them at the beginning of the game which tired them out because their bench wasn’t too deep.”
Though the Bison may have played their best game tonight Campman still feels there is room to improve, “We still aren’t executing real well. You don’t want to say you should have won by 30, but we should have won a lot bigger than what we did, but it is still our best game we’ve played to date. We need Jarrin (Campman) and Drew (Hipps) to put up better numbers offensively. If we could have converted on the short shots inside the way we dominated the boards we would have won by 20.”
Matt Shiner and Todd Hryn were once again able to put together solid performances with scoring 22 and 16 points respectively. “Matt Shiner is putting up good numbers he had 22 points, and he probably played his best overall game. He did still make his fair share of mistakes, but he’s putting up around 17 points a game and you can’t deny the numbers there.” Said Coach Campman
The Bison were able to get great production from their bench tonight according to Campman, “Cruise Kerr only had 3 points tonight, but it seemed like he had 15. He had a lot of rebounds tonight; Cruise is a strong kid if he gets his hands on the ball not many players are getting it from him. He played well tonight. Also, Joel (Fox) and Nate (Greenland) may have only played 4 or 5 minutes in the first half, but the minutes they played gave the starters a break so they could play through the second half. When the bench comes in their job is to maintain the lead or increase it, and that’s what they did tonight. They all did a nice job off the bench.”
Clearfield maintained the lead the entire game and Coach Campman attributes a lot of that to the good play of guards Parker Herrington and Jarrin Campman tonight, “ Parker played his best game of the season; He has struggled the first few games. He (Parker) had 4 or 5 really nice assists tonight, and played much better defensively. Jarrin also played well he didn’t turn the ball over tonight or make mistakes, but he needs to score more.”
Clearfield travels to St. Marys on Tuesday to take on the Dutchman, whom they lost to in the first round of the Keystone Tip-off Tournament last week. The Bison’s will look to build on tonight’s performance and try to start off 2-0 in District 9 league play.
