HYDE – Mandy Rowles hurled a two-hitter and belted a solo home run while Julie Colesar and Sarah Kovalick drove in two runs apiece as the Clearfield Area High School softball team downed Brockway 6-1 at the Bison Sports Complex Monday for its third win in a row.
Rowles was around the plate with all her pitches, striking out nine Lady Rovers and walking only one.
The junior right-hander finished strong, retiring the last 10 batters.
An unearned run cost her a shutout.
\”That was maybe the best game I\’ve ever seen her throw,\” Clearfield coach Bob Dixon said. \”A lot of times, she just rears back and fires. She was moving the ball really well tonight. (Her) curve ball was breaking really well. She was locating well. I thought she did a really good job.\”
Just as she did in a 5-1 victory over defending PIAA Class A champion Curwensville last week, Rowles ignited the Lady Bison offense with a homer. She led off the second inning with a towering smash to center for her third roundtripper of the season.
Losing pitcher Lee Ann Holt punched a two-out single behind first base to drive in Brockway\’s run in the top of the third. Sarah Anderson, aboard on a forceout, got into scoring position with two stolen bases.
The game wasn\’t tied very long.
Alanna Luzier bunted for a hit and Megan Butler walked to set the table for Clearfield\’s 3-4-5 hitters. Holt seemed on the verge of wriggling off the hook when Lady Rover third baseman Sarah Anderson made a nice play on Ashley Lias\’ bunt to get a forceout at third and then corralled Rowles\’ grounder for the second out.
However, Colesar drilled a liner past Holt for the clutch, game-winning hit, scoring Butler and Lias.
\”She came through,\” Dixon said. \”She did a nice job.\”
Colesar and her younger sister, Suzie, each had two of Clearfield\’s seven hits.
Suzie Colesar, a freshman, singled to right leading off the fourth inning, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on Kovalick\’s single that glanced off Brockway second baseman Jalina Sabatose\’s glove into center field.
The Lady Bisons (3-2) tacked on their last two runs in the sixth thanks to a pair of Lady Rover errors around a walk and Kovalick\’s RBI-groundout.
\”I\’m really pleased,\” Dixon said. \”I thought we played a solid game.
\”(It\’s good) to get on a roll, get our sticks working. We were real aggressive at the plate. We were aggressive in the field. Defensively Alanna made some real nice plays. And (Kenzie) McGovern did a nice job behind the plate.\”
Holt, a junior right-hander, struck out for and walked three for Brockway (2-2).
Clearfield has two more home games this week, Wednesday against Sheffield and Friday against Ridgway.
