South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said Wednesday he plans to focus on New Hampshire as he searches for a foothold in the Republican field.
Graham, who has been polling at the back of the 2016 pack since he entered the race, said he will try and emulate his friend, Arizona Sen. John McCain, who upset George W. Bush in New Hampshire in 2000 by holding more than 100 town hall meetings there.
“I was with John McCain when he was fifth in a four-person race. He did 100 town hall meetings in New Hampshire. I’m going to try to duplicate that,” Graham told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on “New Day.” “I think I’m the best person to be commander-in-chief. And I thank God for Iowa and New Hampshire, because it gives a person like me a chance.”
Graham has struggled to get above 2% support in most polls and has consistently trailed Donald Trump and other popular candidates in his home state of South Carolina, also an early primary state.
