CURWENSVILLE – It was business as usual for the Curwensville Lady Tide softball team Monday afternoon. The Lady Tide, on a cool, damp spring afternoon at home, won their fifth straight contest when they handled the Lady Elkers from Ridgway in easy fashion 18-0.
The battle was over in just two and a half innings, thanks to the 15 run mercy rule. Actually the Tide just about had the required 15 runs in the first inning when they came up with 11 tallies to put the game away.
Holly Lansberry threw a three inning no-hitter, issuing just one walk. That walk coming in the third inning with two outs. The Curwensville junior pitcher is now 5-1 on the year from the circle.
Highlighting the Tide’s explosive first inning were two other juniors, Jenessa Stiles and Ashley Demchak. The duo each had two hits in the inning. Both with a single and a double and two RBI’s.
In all, Curwensville had five hits, six walks and two Ridgway errors to put those 11 runs on the board in the first frame.
The second inning wasn’t much better for the Lady Elkers, as the Lady Tide added another seven runs and would not bat again the rest of the afternoon.
Demchak lead all hitters with three hits and a total of three RBI’s. Sara Clark added a double and drove in two while Erin Bressler also knocked in two teammates for Curwensville.
Head coach Allen Leigey was pleased with the abbreviated contest, “The girls were all business this afternoon and really didn’t let up at all in the brief time we were out there. Demchak (Ashley) and Stiles (Jenessa) did a nice job at the plate. Then again the whole squad was on top of their game.”
The Lady Tide now stand at 6-1 on the 2008 season and will next entertain St. Mary’s Tuesday afternoon at home. Game time is 4:15 pm.
