A man armed with a knife and a gun barricaded himself inside a Colorado police headquarters late Friday, and a negotiator is trying to coax him out.
The man walked into the lobby of the Arvada Police Department and made suicidal comments, authorities said.
Along with the negotiator, a SWAT team is at the scene, said police spokeswoman Jill McGranahan. Authorities are using flash bangs to startle him so they can disarm him.
“We have evacuated the building and the surrounding communities are safe,” McGranahan said. “We have the situation contained to the police headquarters.”
Police officials warned residents to avoid the area until the situation is resolved.
The police lobby is separate from the building, and provides no access to the rest of the police department. The man appears to be alone in the building. There are no prisoners in the holding cells, authorities said.
Arvada is a suburb of Denver.
