Millersville– Ten Curwensville Area High School wrestlers advanced through the marathon first session of the Penn Manor Tournament Friday night, including eight who won their only match to move into Saturday morning\’s championship quarterfinals.
Six of the seven letterwinners in Golden Tide lineup were successful in their season-opening bouts.
Tyler Peters at 112 pounds, Jarrett Sloppy at 160, Nick Sipes at 189 and Nick Caldwell at heavyweight engineered falls, while Jeff Thomas at 130 and Brett McCracken at 145 earned decisions.
Derek Brothers at 103 and Nate Russell at 215 also were victorious.
Two others are still in the hunt for team points in the wrestlebacks. Both 135-pounder Duane Wriglesworth at 152-pounder Cody Palmer had pins in the pigtail round, lost in the first round and then bounced back with wins in the first round. Palmer registered his second fall, while Wriglesworth advanced with a major decision.
Curwensville had one of the largest contingents of returning wrestlers to the Penn Manor mats Saturday. Two dozen schools, most in Eastern Pennsylvania, are represented.
