DUBOIS — The Curwensville Area High School girls basketball team\’s opportunity to take a firm grip on first place in the Allegheny Mountain League South Division was denied by DuBois Central Catholic in a key showdown Tuesday night.
The Lady Cardinals, paced by senior Rachel Coggins\’ double-double, halted the Lady Tide\’s nine-game winning streak, 47-34, to move into the AML South lead at 7-2.
Coach Vic Gearhart\’s 14-4 Lady Tide dropped into second place at 5-2 with three games remaining, Friday at home against Johnsonburg (8-10, 3-4 in the AML North), Feb. 6 at Ridgway (1-16, 1-7 in the AML South) and Feb. 9 at home against Sheffield (6-12, 2-4 in the AML North). The Lady Tide owns victories over Ridgway (56-19) and Sheffield (57-43).
Coggins, a 6-0 center, scored 12 points and pulled down 20 rebounds for DCC, which hosts Kane (9-10, 2-3 in the AML North) Friday in its league finale. The Lady Cardinals, who lost 57-50 at Curwensville on Jan. 2, are 10-9 overall.
