The Gant Daily Athlete of the week for March 5 through March 11 is a 4 person selection of former winners.
103 pound Curwensville Freshman wrestler Derek Brothers capped his fine rookie season with a 2-3 mark to place 8th at the AA states to finish the year at 32-9. Brothers was the athlete of the week last week when he won the Southwest Regional title.
135 pound Mo Valley wrestler Ryan Jacoby also ended his year with an 8th place at states. He went 2-3 to end his fine career with an outstanding 34-3 senior record. Jacoby won athlete of the week earlier this year when he notched his 100th career win.
189 pound Curwensville wrestler Nick Sipes put an exclamation point on his great 2-sport high school career with a 3rd place finish at states. Sipes went 4-1 to end the year at 32-3 and a career with 122 wins, the all-time record for Curwensville. Sipes is the only 3-time winner of the athlete of the week – twice now for wrestling, once for football.
Clearfield heavyweight Sean Owen went 4-2 at AAA states to place 5th. Owen finishes his sophomore campaign at an area leading 35-9. Owen was the athlete of the week earlier on the year when he won the Tool City tournament.
Sorry about the 4-way tie, but all of these wrestlers did such a great job this past week; it was too tough to give one more credit than another!
