DUBOIS – At Monday night’s supervisors’ meeting, members of the Sandy Township Police Department were commended for responding and quickly resolving an incident last week involving a suspected car thief striking and killing a woman while trying to flee the scene on Brown Street.
Township officials also expressed condolences to the family of Besty Andryka, who was killed as a result of the incident. Supervisors Dave Sylvis and Jim Jeffers, along with Township Manager Dave Monella, thanked citizens Dick Castonguay, Joe Becker and Lisa Becker nee LaBrasca for their assistance in resolving the incident.
“The actions they took to apprehend and assist in a major incident shows the type of people we have living in our community and area. It shows this is a small community. We worry about our neighbors and our friends,” said Jeffers.
In other business, the culvert project on Mountain Run Road will be pushed back a few weeks. Township Engineer Perry Bowser announced that the culvert construction was behind schedule, and the delivery date was moved back from Sept. 9 until Sept. 29. The township will be doing the installation itself and will begin preparation work ahead of time.
Monella expressed his concern that the culvert installation was getting close to the edge of winter.
Also, the supervisors noted that the first fall clean-up will take place Sept 18-19. It will start at 7 a.m. both days. It will end at 4 p.m. Sept 18 and at 12 p.m. Sept 19. Like the spring clean-up, it will accept tires and appliances with Freon, electronics, sinks and other furniture.
The supervisors also announced that Wal-Mart had won its tax appeal. This will result in less tax income to the township and the school district, the supervisors said.
