Literacy Volunteers:
Can you imagine what it would be like not to be able to read to your child, follow a recipe, fill out an application, read your personal mail, or balance your checkbook? There are many people in our county who cannot read and who need someone to tutor them so they can learn.
To become a literacy tutor, individuals must have a high school diploma or equivalency (GED). Volunteers complete a training class with other new volunteers and are then matched to a person wanting to learn to read. Volunteers are provided with the necessary materials to teach their student.
Volunteers must be willing to make a commitment to meet at least once weekly for two hours, but hours are flexible. The meeting place will be convenient to both tutor and the adult student (i.e. library, area church, etc.)
This program will provide the volunteers with many rewarding experiences and a sense of helping other people achieve their goals. If you would like more information on this or any other opportunities, please call the Volunteer Center at 765-1398 or 1-800-446-5935.
The Volunteer Center is a community outreach program of the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, Inc., and is funded by the Area Agency on Aging, national and state grants and local contributions.
