CURWENSVILLE – DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) handed the Curwensville Area High School girls softball squad its second straight defeat in two days, 8-0, Tuesday afternoon on the home field of the Lady Tide.
Riley Assalone of the Lady Cardinals threw a three-hit shutout that included nine strikeouts while not walking a batter.
Curwensville (3-2) played much better defense (no errors) than on Monday afternoon when eight errors lead to a 16-9 loss to West Branch. Lady Tide head coach Allen Liegey saw the difference, saying, “We really cleaned up our defense today compared to yesterday against the Lady Warriors (West Branch). If we had played like that we would have had a good chance at Monday’s game. But, it was great to see the kids respond defensively and I just hope that continues.”
Leigey also saw the first three hitters of DCC do all of the damage, “We just couldn’t get those first three batters for DuBois Central out. They basically did all the damage and that was the story of this game.”
Macey Hanes, leadoff hitter for DCC, apparently likes the number four, as the center fielder went four for four on the day at the plate, scored four times, and added four stolen bases.
Assalone also went for four for four and hit for the cycle, as the Lady Cardinal hurler homered in the fifth inning, a two-run shoot.
Batting third for DCC was the catcher, Jordan Frank, who had just one hit but drove in two runs.
Of Curwensville’s three hits, one was a double by second baseman Kayley Harnett.
The only other base hits for the Lady Tide were singles, one each by first baseman Nikki Harker and one by Teghan Jacobson, the designated player.
Curwensville, 3-2, will make its first road trip of the season on Thursday when they travel to Brockway to play the Lady Rovers. Game time is 4:15 pm.
