Rick Santorum isn’t officially a candidate for president yet, but he’s already blitzing Republican voters in an early primary state with robocalls.
Santorum’s political outfit, Patriot Voices, sent the recorded calls to Republicans in South Carolina on Monday urging them to attend their precinct-level GOP meetings, which convene every March in the state and determine which delegates attend county conventions next month.
Those conventions, in turn, elect delegates to the South Carolina GOP convention later this spring. Many of the county meetings also hold presidential straw polls.
The Santorum calls appear designed to get his like-minded conservatives out to the precinct meetings and involved in the party process.
“Let’s revitalize the conservative movement within the Republican Party as one voice,” Santorum says in one of the calls. “This is Rick Santorum, thank you for all the work you do and your dedication to our Republican Party.”
A recording of the call was provided to CNN by a Republican in Berkeley County, near Charleston, who received it.
A spokesman for Santorum did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the calls.
