Joseph C. Zappia Jr., CLU, 66, of DuBois died Monday, Dec. 22, 2014 at Johnstown Select Specialty Hospital in Johnstown after a lengthy illness.
Born June 2, 1948 in DuBois, he was the son of the late Joseph C. Zappia Sr. and Orpha (Mancuso) Zappia. He was the second of two sons.
On Aug. 6, 1977 at the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, he married Marlene A. (Philips) Zappia. She survives.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He was a 1966 graduate of DuBois Central Catholic High School. He earned an Associate’s degree in business from Penn State in 1971 and a Bachelor of Science degree in community development from Penn State in 1974. He later earned the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation from the American College of Financial Services in Bryn Mawr in 1990.
He was the founder of Zappia Insurance and Financial Group and worked in the insurance business for more than 35 years. He was an award-winning insurance agent.
He enjoyed singing, making people laugh and having fun. He was an avid weight lifter and past board member of the DuBois Area YMCA. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and clients.
He’s survived by his children, Joseph Zappia III of DuBois and Dr. Gina Zappia of Latrobe and a brother, Dr. Charles A. Zappia and his wife, Mary Jane of San Diego, Calif., and their two children, and his nieces, Angela Zappia and Gabriela Zappia, both of California. He’s also survived by an aunt, Mary Teresa Zappia of DuBois.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Daniel Kresinski as celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery.
