CURWENSVILLE – In the first of five straight home games, the Curwensville boys basketball team downed the Harmony Owls Wednesday night 52-43 in a Moshannon Valley league (MVL) contest.
The win gives the Golden Tide a 2-1 record overall and a 1-1 mark in the MVL. Harmony is 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
After trailing 12-11 in the first period the Tide went on a 12-0 run that carried into the second frame until the 5:00 minute mark.
Tide junior Noah Strickland hit a three point shot from half court at the buzzer to end the first eight minutes that gave an 18-12 margin to Curwensville along with a spark to start the second period.
Trey Rauckhorst had eight first quarter points for the Golden Tide and ended up with a total of 19 to lead his squad in scoring. The 6’ 4” senior had 14 of his 19 points in the first half.
With the Tide leading 23-12 with five minutes to go before the intermission Logan Sral, a Harmony senior, hit a three pointer that ended the 12-0 spurt by Curwensville.
At the half time break the Tide were comfortably out in front 30-18 but against an Owl team that historically never quits. And this game was no different.
The Owls went on a 7-0 run of their own midway through the third period to cut the Tide lead to seven at 32-25 with approximately two minutes left in the third stanza.
Curwensville would, however, keep the lead between nine and 10 points the remainder of the game to pick up the win.
Junior guard Jake Terry of Curwensville also had double figures with 11 points.
Tide head coach Shane Pentz talked about the play of his team, “We still only play a couple of good minutes at a time and that just isn’t consistent enough. We played aggressive in the first half but didn’t in the second half and that’s a concern.”
Pentz then added, “Harmony has improved a lot since last season. They play an up tempo style of offense and we have to understand that we need to move our feet better on defense. Something that we will work on.”
The junior varsity game saw Curwensville easily winning over the Owls by a score of 36-20.
Curwensville will be back in action on Friday with another home game, as Ridgway comes to Patton Hall. The JV game starts at 6 pm, with the varsity to immediately follow.
