John M. “Sarge” Barac Jr., 90 of Treasure Lake, DuBois, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at the DuBois Nursing Home.
Born in Falls Creek, he was the son of the late John M. Barac Sr. and Claudia (Ross) Barac.
On Jan. 21, 1950, he married Dolores (Flores) Barac. She preceded him in death on July 17, 2012.
Mr. Barac retired as sergeant major in the U.S. Marine Corps after serving the country for 30 years. He was the recipient of three purple hearts while serving during World War II, the Korean War and two tours of Vietnam.
After his retirement, he, along with his beloved wife, owned “Sid’s Sub Shop” on the corner of Main Street and Long Avenue for many years.
He was a member of the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, where he helped with the polish festival for many years. He was a member of the William L. Dixon Detachment of the Marine Corps League. He loved to go to the casino and play Bingo with his wife. He loved “scratchy” lottery tickets and enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and god-children. He was cared for locally by his god-daughter, Cynthia Frick.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Natalie Barac.
There will be no public visitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. July 2 at the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Daniel Kresinski as celebrant.
Full military honors will be accorded from the church by the members of William L. Dixon Detachment of the Marine Corps League.
Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery.
