CLEARFIELD – PennDOT, its Buckle Up PA program, the National Highway Traffic Administration and law enforcement agencies in Clearfield county are partnering on a Border to Border seatbelt enforcement operation as part of a Click It or Ticket mobilization May 19 to June 8.
The operation will include 370 law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania’s effort to show drivers and passengers that drivers and passengers driving or riding without a seatbelt will result in a ticket, no matter the state.
To increase safety on Pennsylvania’s roadways, state and municipal police will conduct Traffic Enforcement Zones, traffic safety checkpoints and roving patrols to target nighttime drivers. The enforcement will kick off with a concentrated patrol on May 19, starting at 6 p.m.
Local agencies participating in the initiative include the Clearfield Borough and the Lawrence Township police departments.
Last year, the Border to Border mobilization saw participation from dozens of law enforcement agencies during a four-hour morning operation. A total of 970 citations were issued for seatbelt and child safety seat violations, as well as 735 citations for other traffic infractions.
According to PennDOT data, there were 113 crashes in Clearfield County in 2013 in which people were not wearing seatbelts, with four people dying in those crashes.
The effort supplements major enforcement mobilizations in May and June, as well as the Thanksgiving holiday during which PennDOT distributes $1.1 million statewide in federal enforcement funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
