WINGATE — The regular season dual meet standings held true to form as the Clearfield Area High School boys team added the Mountain League Championship title to their already earned regular season crown. The girls team also matched their regular season status as the league runners-up.
The boys barely scraped by host Bald Eagle Area by a 107-103 count; while the girls were edged 119-112 by Penns Valley.
Alec Freeman was a double-winner with gold medals in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Freshman Mason Royer was the only other Bison to claim an individual title as he won the 300 meter hurdles. The Bison did win the 4×400 and 4×800 relays as well.
Bison head coach John Jacob gushed over his boys’ performance, “The boys had a great meet! We needed every point in every event we could get tonight to come away with a four point win against Bald Eagle. Alec Freeman had another great night in the distance department winning the 3200, 1600 and anchoring the 4×800 relay team of Jacob Ryan, Jack Soult and Peyton Preister to victory. He came through again against some very strong competition. Mason Royer ran a season best time in the 300 hurdles to come away with the victory. The meet was one again determined by the final relay where the team of Grant Climie, Casey Wilsoncroft, Seth Caldwell and Mason Royer were able to come home with the victory and seal the win for the Bison. It was a great victory for our team and we had some great performances to lead us into our District 9 Championship Meet.”
The Clearfield girls team actually had more individual wins than the boys – two by Jill Heichel (100 meter dash, long jump), and one each by Rachel Glenny (300 meter hurdles) and Claire Mikesell (800 meter run).
Jacob had this to say about the girls second place finish, “…we fell just a few points short of Penns Valley for a team victory; but we were able to come away with some great individual victories. Jill Heichel had a great night in the sprints and the jumps winning the 100 and long jump and placing in the triple and 200m. She can go into districts with a lot of confidence with the times she ran tonight. Claire Mikesell was able to win a very competitive 800 and also place in the 400 and both relays. The surprise victory of the night was Rachel Glenny winning the 300 hurdles with an impressive time and she also helped the winning 4×800 relay.”
The Bison squads will now prep for the District 9 AAA Championship Meet, which will be held Wednesday May 14 at Kane Area High School, in hopes of qualifying as many people as possible for the PIAA State Championships at Shippensburg University on May 23.
