SHEFFIELD – The Curwensville Area High School softball team pounded out five home runs, and sophomore Riley Young was forced into taking over the pitching duties to pick up two wins over Sheffield on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Tide cruised to a 13-1 win in the opening game and kept the pressure on for a 10-1 win in game two.
Senior pitcher Tierra Shope left the line-up in the second inning of game one after further aggravating a leg injury running to first on an infield error. Young would finish out the day allowing one run in 11 innings to pick up both wins. Shope and Young combined for a no-hitter in game one with eight strike outs and three walks. Young walked all three batters in her first inning of work before settling into her rhythm. Young allowed the single in game two where she struck out seven and walked no one.
“Riley stepped up big when Tierra went down,” said Tide head coach Allen Leigey. “It was good for her to get some innings in, but we hope that Tierra will be ready to go next week.”
One aspect of game one that allowed the sophomore hurler to take over in the circle with confidence was the fact that her team was on top at the time by a score of 11-0. Curwensville brought out its big sticks on the day with multiple extra-base hits.
In the first inning Curwensville went up 2-0 on the strength of Alaina Stiles’ two-run homer. Shope had walked earlier in the inning to score on the big hit.
Nine runs scored for the Lady Tide in the second inning as Haley McGarry and Young singled to open the frame. Two errors, a walk and a hit batsman aided in the scoring. Abby Dugo also singled in the mix before McGarry clouted an inside-the-park home run to push the final three runs across the plate.
Dugo and McCartney also legged out long drives for home runs in the fourth and fifth innings respectively to set the final at 13-1.
“We hit the ball very good in both games,” Leigey said. “We showed some power to left field where there is no fence.”
Game two saw more of the same kind of action for the Black and Gold – solid pitching and power hitting.
Stiles and Dugo paced the Tide at the plate in game two with three hits each. Stiles belted two triples and a home run in the game while Dugo singled three times in her effort. McGarry collected two more hits and Kealy Wassil in the designated player role also had two singles.
Curwensville scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Stiles’ homer in the second was the lone run before adding four more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.
The Lady Tide will hope to keep the bats hot on Monday as they travel to DuBois Central Catholic for a 4:15 start.
