Man Waives Hearing in Drug Case
DUBOIS – A DuBois man accused of possessing heroin waived his right to a preliminary hearing during centralized court in Clearfield County.
Joseph Alan Olewinski, 48, 119 E. Washington Ave., DuBois, is charged with manufacture/delivery/possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, make repairs/sell/etc. offensive weapons and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail is $10,000 unsecured.
Fair to Close Out Rocking to Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
CLEARFIELD – At age 14, Joan Jett picked up her first guitar and not long after that she helped turn the rock world upside down for female musicians.
On Saturday, Aug. 2, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts will turn the Clearfield County Fair upside down with a memorable night of rock-and-roll.
EMPORIUM – With the continued warm and windy spring, the fire danger continues to remain high, according to Jeanne Wambaugh, district forester with the Elk State Forest.
“There were several fires again this weekend,” she said. “There were several fires last weekend too with the largest occurring on April 13. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
CRC to Implement Secret Shopper Program
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Revitalization Corp. (CRC) has announced the implementation of its Secret Shopper program.
The goal of the program is to help downtown businesses evaluate their establishment in terms of business ambiance, service and efficiency.
NETC’s Rear Adm. White Visits CID, Gets Tutorial from Frenchville Man

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Rear Adm. Michael S. White, commander, Naval Education and Training Command (NETC), made his first official visit to the Center for Information Dominance (CID) on April 9.
White, who recently assumed command of NETC, is traveling to Navy Learning Centers throughout the NETC domain to learn first-hand about the training being delivered to the fleet.
County Approves Grant Applications for Programs to Assist Families
CLEARFIELD – Yesterday, the Clearfield County Commissioners approved the grant applications and their sub-contracts for the Family Centers, Promoting Responsible Fatherhood and Time-Limited Family Reunification programs as presented by Cen-Clear Director Rex Lettie.
Tyrone Hospital to Open Rural Health Center in Houtzdale
TYRONE – Officials at the Tyrone Hospital have announced the opening of the Tyrone Hospital Rural Health Center-Houtzdale, a primary care physician practice, located in Houtzdale. The Rural Health Center is set to open May 1
LT Finalizes Loan for Phase III of Sewage Project
CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Supervisors completed the funding process for Phase III of the sewage project at last night’s meeting.
Solicitor James Naddeo reported receiving approval from the state Department of Community & Economic Development for the proposed loan of $3 million from Clearfield Bank & Trust to fund Phase III. He presented the loan documents from CB&T for signatures to finalize the loan.
The supervisors had previously adopted the ordinance authorizing the signing of the loan documents.

Walker Gardens to Open for Tours
BIGLER – Walker Gardens of the quaint village of Bigler will again open to the public. The gardens feature thousands of spring flowers, swans gliding over ponds and waterfalls, which are all interconnected by pathways.
The gardens incorporate vistas with elegant replicas of Greek ruins, a log cabin of the Civil War era, a rustic stump fence and two picturesque outhouses from days gone by and tucked away along the blooming garden paths.
LT Supervisors Award Paving Bids
CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Supervisors awarded bids for proposed paving projects at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Bids for 1,000 tons 2RC Limestone were received as follows: Glenn O Hawbaker – $15.14 per ton, New Enterprise Stone & Lime – $12.40 per ton, Woodland Equipment – $10.35 per ton and Bucktail Excavators Inc., St. Mary’s – $13.44 per ton. The supervisors awarded the bid for limestone to Woodland Equipment, pending legal review.
Bids for paving were received as follows: Glenn O Hawbaker – $386,928.35, New Enterprise – $330,995.85, HRI Inc. – $383,891.00, Grannas Bros – $386,277.75. The bid was awarded to New Enterprise, pending legal review.
County Approves Voting Precinct Change
CLEARFIELD – The Board of Elections will relocate Cooper Township’s second voting precinct, effective for the May 20 Primary Election, after Dawn Graham, director of elections, gained approval from the Clearfield County Commissioners at Tuesday’s regular meeting.
Cooper Township’s second precinct is currently located at the Forest Emmanuel United Methodist Church, located at 302 Winburne-Munson Rd., Morrisdale. It will relocate to the St. John Lutheran Church, located at 3471 Winburne-Munson Rd., Morrisdale.
Tax Collector Accused of Stealing from CASD Waives Hearing
CLEARFIELD – The Girard Township tax collector accused of stealing more than $50,000 in Earned Income Tax from the Clearfield Area School District waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday during Centralized Court at the Clearfield County Jail.
Lucinda Ann Cardinale, 58, of Frenchville has been charged with theft by unlawful taking and theft by failure to make the required disposition of funds. Both charges are third-degree felonies. Cardinale’s bail was set at $10,000 unsecured at her preliminary hearing.
DEP Announces Public Meeting, Hearing for Ridgway Landfill
MEADVILLE – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has announced it will hold a public meeting and formal hearing concerning the Ridgway Borough landfill site in Ridgway Township, Elk County, on April 29 at 6 p.m. at the Ridgway Borough building, 108 Main St., Ridgway.
Check Forgery Suspects Waive Hearings
CLEARFIELD – Two people accused of forging checks waived all charges to the Court of Common Pleas before Magisterial District Judge James Hawkins during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Brandon Scott Sass, 23, of Hyde has been charged with conspiracy/receiving stolen property; conspiracy/other reason access device unauthorized by issuer; other reason access device unauthorized by issuer; possession of access device knowing counterfeit, altered; and false report.
Jo Ann Shugarts, 57, of Clearfield has been charged with conspiracy/receiving stolen property; conspiracy/other reason access device unauthorized by issuer; and conspiracy/possession of access device knowing counterfeit, altered.
DAHS Pound-for-Pound Challenge Collects Clothing for Goodwill
DUBOIS – During the Pound-for-Pound Challenge, sounds of rolling trash cans could be heard throughout the DuBois Area High School, as “challenger” teams collected blue Goodwill bags that lined the hallways.
The DAHS Pound-for-Pound Challenge was a friendly competition created to help collect clothing and shoe donations for Goodwill. Twenty-two teams, consisting of one Life Skills student and two senior athletes, competed in the challenge.
