AMESVILLE – With two runs in the seventh inning, the Moshannon Valley softball team nipped the Curwensville Area High School squad 6-5 in Moshannon Valley League action on Monday.  The Damsels took advantage of  a single and a pair of errors for the walk-off victory.
“We just have to learn how to finish at the close of games,” said Curwensville head coach Allen Leigey. Â “This is the second game this season we let slip away in the bottom of the last inning. Â If we let the game stay close, one bad play can cause a lot of problems.”
The Lady Tide grabbed the early lead in the first inning when Tierra Shope slapped a one-out single. Â After the second out advanced the runner, Nikki Harker chased Shope home with a single.
The Curwensville lead moved to 3-0 in the top of the third with Hannah Dixon drawing a lead-off walk. Â Abby Dugo followed with a single and Shope bunted the runners up a base. Â Alaina Stiles and Harker followed with singles to set the score.
However, the visitor’s advantage evaporated in the bottom of the third as Curwensville found trouble getting the Damsels out. Â Pitcher Hannah Kitko walked to get the inning going. Â Kelsey Kitko put her team on the board with a long double to score the only earned run of the game for Mo Valley. Â Megan Zimmerman followed with a single, but a wild throw to the plate allowed the second run to score. Â Lauren O’Donnell then singled and the Tide woes continued to allow the hosts to take a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Curwensville regained the lead with singles by Dixon and Dugo. Â The big blow came from Stiles with a two-out double.
However, Hannah Kitko started the scoring for Mo Valley again in the seventh with a single. Â An error put runners at first and third with no outs. Â The next batter drew a play at the plate that went wide and a second error on a play at third allowed the winning run to scamper home.
Moshannon Valley took advantage of getting runners on base as six of their eight base-runners scored in the game while the Lady Tide left nine runners stranded. Â Tierra Shope struck out eight batters and walked one in the loss. Â Hannah Kitko recorded five K’s and walked three while scattering nine hits in a winning effort.
Kelsey Kitko was the only Damsel batter with two hits while Stiles and Harker hit safely twice for the Tide.
Curwensville (2-3) will be at home on Wednesday to take on Johnsonburg.
