AMESVILLE – The Curwensville Area High School girls basketball team opened the 2013-14 season Monday night on the road, visiting the Moshannon Valley Lady Damsels, and came home with a hard fought 36-35 victory.
With the Lady Tide trailing 35-34, freshman guard Hannah Dixon hit a bucket just inside the three point line with eight seconds remaining to pull out the win.
The Lady Damsels pushed the Lady Tide until the end as Moshannon Valley took a one point lead into the fourth quarter, 31-30.
Curwensville head coach Rusty McCracken said afterwards, “It’s always good to get the win on opening night even though we didn’t look good out there at times.”
The Tide offense couldn’t get it going for most of the second half but did turn up the defense in the final frame, holding their hosts to just four tallies.
McCracken followed up with, “Mo Valley played very hard, which kept them in the game until the end. And we will take the win, but we certainly need improvement, especially with our shooting.”
Junior Ciara Strickland of Curwensville paced all scorers with 18, while Dixon chipped in with nine.
Ally Kronenwetter with 12 and Hannah Kitko with 10 led the Lady Damsels.
In junior varsity action it was Moshannon Valley beating the Lady Tide by a score of 21-14.
Moshannon Valley, now 1-1 on the season, is next on the road to Juniata Valley for a Wednesday night contest.
The Lady Tide, 1-0, return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Brockway to take on the Lady Rovers. The JV game starts 6 pm and the varsity will immediately follow.
